VLC: Quick Tip

We all know that VLC (Video LAN Player) is one of the best multimedia players available. It’s a multi-platform player that can play everything you can think of and more. Did you know that you can stream your own audio and video material online using VLC? It’s enough to run “Streaming / Exporting Wizard” and it will walk you trough steps of streaming your multimedia to network or saving streams to your HD. That’s not all, if you go to File -> Services Discovery, you will be able to access live movies,videos,TV and radio streams, podcasts and more. Broadband connection is required for streaming high-quality video material.

iTunes: Quick Tip

If the music in your iTunes and iPod sounds unbalanced, you need to adjust the volume level of each track.

1. In iTunes go to Edit ->Select All to select all tracks in your library.

2. Right-click on highlighted tracks, choose “Get Info” and confirm with Yes.

3. Set the volume slider on +100%.

Now all you have to do is to re-sync your iPod.

5 things I don’t like about Pownce

Pownce is yet another social networking service that is becoming kind of popular these days. It is a mixture of Twitter and Jaiku features, but it also enables file sharing. It’s an ambitious project with a great idea, but really poor implementation. Here is why:

1. Pownce is still in early beta. Just like Twitter and Jaiku, it can be very unstable way too often. No, it does not have images of lolcats that are tweaking your serverz when the things go wrong which some people may consider a good thing It just crashes a lot.

2. Pownce desktop app. is a complete disaster. It has an ugly interface, it’s not popping up to inform you about new messages, some features such as adding and inviting friends can only be done by going to http://pownce.com/username.

3. There is a pro version of Pownce account that offers some additional features: sending files up to 100MB, no ad-messages… wait, there is no more – that’s all you will get for only $20 bucks a year !!! Who is crazy here? Would you sell a car with just one wheel on it and tell the one who bought it that you will add other three wheels later? Dear Pownce people, polish your product first, make it more stable and re-write the application from scratch (try not to use AIR pleaseee). Then if it works well, you may ask people to eventually pay for it.

4. It is invite-only for now.

5. Web interface looks kinda ugly. It takes time to get used to it otherwise it’s rather confusing. No RSS feed. It has RSS support. See comments.
